- a stud bolt has a longer threaded section on the end that goes into the block!

Stud screws, often confused with stud bolts, are industrial fastener components used mainly in block assemblies and guide components. A stud screw has threads on both ends, while the middle section is unthreaded.
The thread lengths differ at each end of the stud screw, and the threaded end that goes into the block is always shorter.
Depending on the standard, the thread dimensions of a stud screw are determined by its diameter. For DIN 938 stud screws, the shorter-end thread length is 1 x d, where d is the stud screw diameter. Correspondingly, for DIN 939, the shorter-end thread length is 1.25 x d.
The length of a stud screw is stated as the effective length, where the threaded portion of the shorter end is subtracted from the overall length in the dimensioning.
