OK Autrod 5183 was developed to provide the highest possible strength when welding alloy AA 5083 and other similar high-magnesium alloys. The more common OK Autrod 5356 does not typically meet the welded tensile strength requirements of AA 5083. This alloy is typically used in marine and structural applications where high strength and excellent fracture toughness are important. The alloy is not recommended for elevated-temperature applications, as it is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. The alloy is not heat treatable.
